Personally
From Berniece Rabe ...
My first three books
were Rass, Naomi, and The Girl Who Had No Name.
Now, twenty years later I've completed 2 more books set back in
the thirties, a second Rass book. Some of my characters were patterned
after people I've known, some are blends of people I've known, and
some just come to mind as I write, but those are as real as the
others. I write in a realistic manner to preserve a time, a place
and the people. I create, but I don't distort.
My books speak of survival
of hard times, of handicaps, of rejection and of exposure to harsh
situations. Often there is love and humor interwoven and my characters
not only survive, they live with hope and confidence. I write such
books for I believe all children have a time for suffering and a
time for happiness. How we cope with the suffering determines the
time left to happiness. Our struggles cause us to crumble or to
grow, the choice is ours. To make my readers aware that there is
a choice is why I write.
I didn't start writing
until I was forty, so my career must last forever for me to get
it all on paper. Grandchildren add to my creations. Their struggles
differ from my own, their chores involve the latest technology,
but the things that make them laugh or cry still makes contact with
the things that made me laugh or cry. When I write of struggles
set back in time, it makes them aware of the evolution of families,
the gaining of strengths by overcoming weaknesses.
It is okay to feel sad
or angry and be determined not to let history repeat itself, and
it's fine to laugh at old time ways, then to feel proud of those
people from whom you've sprung, for they survived their time and
era. All this helps you not forget how competent and strong you
truly are and allows you to dare to reach a little higher.
